History
The history of the dog collar can be traced back thousands of years, as dogs have been domesticated and kept as pets and working companions for centuries. The use of collars for dogs has evolved over time, serving various purposes and reflecting changes in human-dog relationships and societal norms.
In ancient civilizations such as Egypt, Greece, and Rome, dogs were often adorned with collars made of leather or fabric. These collars were primarily functional, used for identification, control, and protection. They were sometimes embellished with decorative elements, such as precious metals or gemstones, indicating the social status or importance of the dog's owner.
During the Middle Ages, dog collars continued to serve practical purposes. Collars made of leather or metal were used to restrain and control dogs while hunting, herding, or for security purposes. Collars with spikes or sharp points were sometimes employed to protect the dog from predators or as a deterrent in combat situations.
As dogs became more commonly kept as pets during the Renaissance and Enlightenment periods, the use of collars expanded beyond practicality. Collars became a means of identification, with tags or engraved plates displaying the dog's name or owner's information. Decorative elements, such as ribbons or bells, were added to collars as a fashion statement or to enhance the dog's appearance.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, the development of new materials and manufacturing techniques revolutionized dog collar design. Leather, nylon, and metal hardware became popular choices for collars due to their durability and accessibility. Collars were increasingly mass-produced and standardized, making them more affordable and widely available to dog owners.
Today, dog collars serve a range of purposes, including identification, control, training, and fashion. They come in various styles, materials, and sizes to accommodate different breeds and needs. Collars with integrated technology, such as GPS tracking or electronic training devices, have also become more prevalent.
The evolution of the dog collar reflects the changing attitudes towards dogs, from working companions to beloved pets. While the primary function of the collar remains to provide a means of control and identification, its design and features have adapted to align with modern lifestyles and the diverse needs of dogs and their owners.
Leather 101
English Bridle vs Harness vs Skirt
All Xcentric Fab Co American and Utility leather goods are made out of the finest, most environmentally friendly American leather available - Wicket & Craig veg tanned leather. Most of our products are made of either English Bridle or Harness, but some wallets, belts, leashes and collars are made of Russet Skirt.
English Bridle leather Labor-intensive and incredibly appealing, English Bridle is a traditional leather with a variety of uses, from classic equestrian gear to high-end leather goods. Drum dyed and hot stuffed, English Bridle is smooth, flexible yet durable. Beautifully crafted with a flawless, even surface. This type of leather tends to have a more matte, satin finish.
Harness leather Hot-dipped in a proprietary mix of oils and waxes, Harness is weatherproof and has a distinguished depth of color. Able to repel water, the lighter tones also display a handsome pull-up—a signature trait of high-quality, full-grain leathers. Perfect for strap goods, it works equally as well for shoes and bags when the weight is split down. This leather tends to have a more gloss finish.
Skirt Leather Traditionally used for saddles, holsters and sheaths, Skirting displays similar characteristics to classic tooling leathers but is drum dyed. Although it boasts a subtle natural color, it will still tool, mold and take finish. This leather tends to have a very matte finish, as it is not dipped in oils or waxes.
